 How to arrange a rental

"I understand that I can't pre-arrange rental accommodation, but where can I stay when I first arrive and what help can the uni give me?"

The Facts:

Before you leave home

  1. If you are a new international student, book Airport Reception and Temporary Accommodation. Returning or interstate students may wish to make their own booking at a Temporary Accommodation provider.
  2. Think about your needs. Read over the Issues to Consider and Before you sign anything chapters of this guide.
  3. Become familiar with local prices and facilities. Browse rental accommodation vacancies on UQ Rentals Online or the Real Estate Agents to look over rental accommodation advertisements. While it is very unlikely that the same properties will be available when you arrive in Brisbane, looking over current advertisements is the best way to know what the rental market is currently like.

Once you have arrived

  1. New international students should attend a compulsory Getting Started Session.
  2. Attend an Accommodation Information Session, which teaches you how to find accommodation vacancies and gives you important legal information about renting in Queensland (if you book Airport reception and Temporary Accommodation, you will be provided with detailed information about travelling from your temporary accommodation provider).
  3. Use our online resources to find current vacancies.
  4. Contact the lessor or housemate to make an appointment to inspect the properties you have selected. Try to arrange to look over two or three properties in an afternoon or morning.
  5. Make sure you have the paperwork in order when you move in. See Starting your tenancy for a guide on what to do and what to expect.

Hints from other students
  • When you book airport reception, look carefully at your temporary accommodation options and what the prices include. On-campus temporary accommodation includes all meals, so is pretty good value for money. It was also good not to have to worry about transport during my first few days in Brisbane....
